Romans is heralded as one of the most brilliant legal methodologies ever written. In fact, students of law, once studied Romans because Paul lays out a brilliant legal argument to help us understand God’s Way.
Let’s just say that I am dying to meet Paul when Jesus Returns. Simultaneously, I am terrified because Paul is a phenomenal academic. In his day, pre coming to know Jesus, he was the best scholar of his generation. Man, the guy can pose an argument.
Romans 6 vs 15-17 is a magnificent piece of Holy Scripture.
People were peopleling by trying to find a loophole to excuse their sin, as we still are peopleling today. The argument was, “If God gave Jesus to conquer sin, thereby giving us grace, doesn’t our sin allow God’s Grace to increase, so let’s sin.”
Isn’t it the foolish appearance of wisdom we hear all the time, still today? -“Love Is love, my choice my life, don’t judge, live and let live, religion has the same value system so…., but I am not hurting anyone.”
We are so skilled at justifying our sin AND unwillingness to surrender our delusions of control & god-complex that we have turned a simple 10 Commandments into an insane legal industry; arguing any nonsense to imaginatively avoid facing the music.
Gosh, the go to argument,so often, is, “To the best of my knowledge I have no idea, these allegations are an attempt to…, I have no recollection of these events, etc.”
BUT WE LIE……
In fact, the mere fact that we invent ways of trying to avoid the consequences of our choices is proof that God has in fact placed His Good Law in our heart. WHY? Well, without having God’s Law of right and wrong in us, we wouldn’t need to invent stories to get away with our bad choices because we wouldn’t know they were bad to begin with.
This is where the smouldering rubber hits the scorching tar.
Paul points out to us that BECAUSE God put His Law into our hearts, we wilfully, do what’s wrong proving ourselves sinners because we go against what God says is right.
God’s Law is designed to bring us into awareness of our wrongness SO THAT we can climb off our self-righteous god-complex AND turn to God by accepting Jesus to help us unlearn the social conditioning we surrendered to by repeating the sins of our father/mother- Adam and Eve- in this sin saturated world we live in that we justify as hegemonic human experience.
Paul teaches us that WE ONLY HAVE 1 of 2 choices- either surrender to sin OR surrender to God. Anything else we imagine beyond those choices is pure speculative escapism wrapped up in philosophical pontifications that we call religions/ beliefs/ideologies- puffs of vapours that carry no weight to save us from THE ONLY LIVING GOD’S coming judgment.
We WILL NOT escape it, whether we believe it or not. Like air, water, food, the stars, universe, earth, animals, etc, exist, so too does God and His Judgement Day.
BUT, here is the AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL thing- God doesn’t want anyone to be on the wrong side of His wrathful judgement.
GOD WANTS TO FORGIVE US, SAVE US, AND LOVE US INTO RIGHTEOUSNESS.
How do we do that?
1) Respond to the tug of God in your heart that calls you to go to church, read the Holy Bible, get honest with a Christian friend.
2) Ask God to help you accept JESUS.
3) Accept Jesus by confessing your sins, acknowledging Him as The righteous Lord and Saviour and ask Him to accept you too. Don’t stress He already accepted you, but wants you to be humble enough to not take His Acceptance for granted.
4) Join a church, join a connect group, go to Bible school to understand the Bible because god uses those things to help us unlearn and relearn who He says we are.
5) Ask a Pastor to pray that you get filled with God’s Holy Spirit.
6) Each struggle God’s Spirit brings up in us, pray to God to help you let go of your attachment and understanding of it and to guide you into learning to obey His Way.
This is what Paul is explaining to us in Romans 6 vs 17, “But thanks be to God! For though at one time you were slaves to sin, you have obeyed with all your heart the truths found in the teaching you received.”
God knows that we are sinners, and wants to save us from it through Jesus. We can NEVER be good enough for god, so what god does is that he covers us with Jesus, which allows us to be in God’s Grace and Metcy as we pour out our hearts when we realise more of our that need to be made Holy as we discover it through God’s Word.
God isn’t expecting us to be perfect before coming to Him, He expects us to keep responding to Jesus’s Way as the Holy Spirit makes us aware of areas that need to change as we walk towards eternity in God’s Kingdom.
BUT…..
Make no mistake, we are surrendered. We can choose to be surrendered to God instead of the things that lead us to the wrong side of Judgement Day.
JESUS LOVES YOU
