The Tragedy of Missing the Truth: A Reflection on John 3:31-33

https://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/john-3/

John 3:31-33 is both a heartbreaking truth and a wake-up call. It declares that Jesus, the One from above, holds divine authority, yet so many reject His testimony. This passage makes me feel both sadness and righteous anger. Sadness, because humanity has access to the greatest, most life-altering relationship with the only true living God (Yahweh/Yeshua/Holy Spirit), yet we cling to knowledge that merely seems to answer our questions. And anger, because we are so hypnotised by our need to be right that we miss the truth standing before us.

The Limits of Knowledge and the Fear of Truth

We live in a world where knowledge is prioritised within limited parameters, shaped by societal indoctrination and the fear of being wrong. Science, philosophy, and reason are vital tools given by God to help us navigate reality, but we often use them to create rigid walls around what we call “truth”. The dominant assumption is that only empirical evidence matters, yet this presupposition is itself a philosophical stance, not a scientific one.¹ Why do we restrict knowledge to what can be measured? The answer lies in our need for control, our attachment to self-identification, our fear of the unknown, and perhaps our fear of looking foolish.²

Whatever the root cause, my heart shatters knowing that people miss out on the most mind-blowing reality of all, hearing God speak. I have heard His audible voice twice in my life. It is impossible to describe, except to say that every fibre of my being instinctively recognised the voice of my Maker. How do I know it wasn’t my imagination? Because everything He told me would happen, happened exactly as He said. I share these experiences in my book, ‘Bedroom Called Rainbow’, but even that is just a small fraction of what I have witnessed.

Lived Evidence of God’s Reality

John 3:33 states, “He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true.” This is an intellectually profound statement. If people like me testify that we experience God, then our lived reality verifies the existence of something beyond naturalistic evidence.

Take, for example, my hairstyling career. In 2016, God told me to pursue the Hairstylist of the Year award, something I never thought possible as I had blown the money set aside for it on a suicidal drug-binge. I was found drowning in my own vomit. Three months later, I won. Or during Covid-19, when God made a way for me to do my Bachelor’s degree for free, breaking deep-seated insecurities that had plagued me. And now, as I work on my Master’s degree, I find myself constantly challenged by the limits of human knowledge, realising just how little each of us truly knows.³

This isn’t an insult to human intelligence, it is a divine invitation to humility, connection, and discovery. None of us, individually, stand a chance at fully grasping reality, which is why we need God and each other. The more research I do, the more I see history, archaeology, and philosophy continually pointing back to Jesus, the Holy Bible, and its validity.⁴

Missing the Obvious: Humanity’s Greatest Mistake

John 3:31-33 makes me angry at humanity’s blindness. We are surrounded by evidence of God, the complexity of the universe, the design of DNA, the nature of consciousness, and yet, we refuse to see it. We are like someone calling a block of cheese a car, then wondering why it won’t get us to work on time.

This passage very clearly presents Jesus as being above all, from above, and therefore God Himself. And yet, despite His divine authority, humanity stubbornly clings to its own flawed reasoning, rejecting the One who can actually answer the deepest longings of the soul.

I make no claim of being a marvellous Christian. In fact, I fail dismally at it. I spend more time crying at Jesus’ feet than anything else, because He deserves perfection, and I am so far from it. But Jesus has rescued me from others and from myself more times than I can count. I should not be alive today. Yet here I am, a walking miracle, sitting in the home that God Himself put together for me, writing this, praying that you will wake up and realise how wrong the world and even yourself have been about Jesus.

A God-Moment That Proves His Reality

Just yesterday, Monday, 24 February 2025, God orchestrated something incredible. A client was swapped to my chair because she arrived an hour before her original stylist started. I shared stories from my adventure holiday in Graskop, Mpumalanga, boasting a little about how I confronted my greatest fears, including falling from a cliff.

It turns out she was about to embark on the same type of journey—a four-day adventure trip, facing her own fears. Hearing my story, she said, “God put me in your chair on purpose today. My life is at a place where I need to change some things, but fear stops me. Thank you for giving me courage to confront my limiting beliefs.”

What are the chances?
That she would be reassigned to me? That we would have the exact conversation she needed to hear?
That God would use my testimony to prepare her for her own breakthrough?

These things do not happen by coincidence. They are proof that God is actively at work.

The Invitation to See the Truth

John 3:31-33 makes one thing clear, Jesus speaks from above, while we, in our limited human wisdom, speak from the earth. If you are willing to receive His testimony, you will certify that God is true. Not as a theory. Not as a philosophical debate. But as a reality that can change your life forever.

Are you willing to let go of the need to be right long enough to consider that God Himself may be calling you to something greater?

Because He is.
And if you listen, you might just hear His voice speaking to you too.

JESUS LOVES YOU.
Let Him.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the truth revealed in John 3:31-33. You alone are above all, and Your testimony is greater than human wisdom. Lord, open our eyes to see beyond the limits of earthly knowledge and into the reality of Your presence. Break through the barriers of pride, doubt, and fear that keep so many from receiving Your truth.

Jesus, You came from above to reveal the Father and to bring us into relationship with You. Let those who read these words today awaken to the evidence of Your existence, not just in Scripture but in their own lives. Speak to hearts, Lord, as only You can, and lead many into the wonder of knowing You personally.

May we, like John the Baptist, bear witness to Your truth with boldness and humility. May our testimonies certify that You are true so that others may turn from deception and into the light of salvation. Thank You for Your grace, mercy, and relentless pursuit of those who are lost.

In Jesus’ Holy name,

Amen.
